Living = Learning
Happy Sunday — I am experimenting with a new newsletter flow.
Without further ado, let’s jump right in!
Here are 3 concepts I have been thinking about lately:
The Regrets of Wasted Time
Basics & the Ego (Pros Make Routine Plays Routinely)
Relearning + Reuptake of Knowledge + Entertainment
The Regrets of Wasted Time
I have been on some “woe is me” bullshit lately.
Ah — how fantastic. Instead of utilizing the time I have, I am wasting more time splashing around in my shame.
One thing that has opened my eyes is that holding onto the shame and guilt of missed opportunities holds us back from being able to capitalize on present and future opportunities.
Shame and Regret become so habitual that we forget that life should not be lived with such negative emotions.
Shame is a useful signal and helps us determine the next best step.
It is tough to notice the bountiful beauty of life when constantly caught up in the chaos of concern.
Shame is a heavy weight to carry — I encourage you to let your shame go and get busy working on the life you want to live.
Basics & the Ego
“Professionals make routine plays routinely”
The basics are where success and longevity are cultivated. It is not always fancy and flashy. Quite often it is the opposite.
Over years of discipline and focus — one can achieve great things and impact many others.
Doing the basics at an elite level is a sure way to unlock your full potential.
Lately…
My ego has been holding me back — It’s telling me that I am too good for the basics.
I know that is a damn lie! Yet — the battle wages on due to the endless effort of the ego.
The basics are boring — we have to override the constant need for flashy actions and stick with the solid work.
Some basics of life that I am focusing on these next couple of weeks:
Drinking enough water and electrolytes. This is easy to lose track of so I am making it a priority during my morning routine.
Sleep hygiene: no screens 1 hour before bed, meditation routine, and consistent sleep timing.
Consuming 30 grams of protein each meal/snack.
Calling my mom 2x a week minimum
Walking 30 minutes daily (at least 10 minutes of rucking)
Training 45 minutes (morning specifically. I am too likely to skip out if I push it back to the afternoon.)
Improve Meditation and reading habits (refocus!)
Just some simple actions I know will have a great impact on my health and lifestyle. The basics give me the power and the base of support to launch toward larger and more extravagant goals.
Relearning + Reuptake of Impactful Knowledge or Entertainment
Recently, I have been looking at my bookshelf and flipping through the books I have already read.
I am deciding the reread 2 of my favorites — even though I have already read them. Why? Seems like a waste of time.
The purpose of reuptake is to gain a different perspective on the lessons I am learning. I have a different perspective of myself and the world around me — and going back through these books is connecting old and new ideas.
Even though the material is not brand new — my processing of the material is different since I am in a different place in life.
It is also a great way to remind yourself of who you are, what cloth you’re cut from, and what the mission is.
Sometimes, going back is needed to go forward.
Simply put — the same man never reads the same book twice. Just like you don’t step in the same river twice.
You can do this with a variety of things:
Rewatch a favorite movie (Rush Hour series for me)
Reread the books that have impacted you the most
Revisit memories (childhood or the “glory days”)
You will be surprised and intrigued by what sticks out to you. Be open to receiving the messages.
